Our dog, Buddy passed away from osteosarcoma on January 5th. He was only 8 years old. He was having an amputation surgery from his shoulder which was the only option for saving him. But the Doctor called us and said the cancer has spread all around his shoulder. If we did the surgery he will still suffer from the pain and he surggested us for euthanasia…Buddy ate a boiled chicken breast the day before and he wanted to come home with me. He was in pain but he was still managing well in his condition that is why we dicided to have a surgery for his future. I was all thinking about the future and ready to take care of him post surgery. No way did I think that he would die on the operating table.
We belive Doctors and staff all did their best to try to save him but we just can not stop thinking back what we could have done for him.
We took him in Augast 28th because he started limping and the Doctor did a General Exam but Buddy was so excited that the Doctor could not see the limping. The conclusion was that he may have had a sprain. We felt relived but his limping was getting obviously worse so we went back to see the Doctor on Sptember 24th for the full exam, X-ray, blood work and a result came back clear then the Doctor told us it is a tendon problem. We blindly belived or wanted to belive it was a tendon problem so we kept going back for pain madications until December 29th. On that day, our Doctor was on holiday so substitute Doctor saw Buddy then he felt a broken bone. We did some X-rays again and found out his tumor broke many of his bones then the Doctor suspected an osteosarcoma.
We understood that all the exam shows clear in that time so the Doctor told us it is a tendon problem but if just a tendon problem it should recover in one month or just get better. If the Doctor mentioned a little possibility of the osteosarcoma which also has smilarl symptoms include swelling, lameness, joint or bone pain and bone cancer does appear more often in large to giant breeds of dogs like Buddy that we would have not waited to see the Doctor again so long.
If it was this problem or if it could be that problem or if, if if.. does not give us Buddy back and we are not blameing the Doctor. It is our responsibility that we should have gone back to see the Doctor again much sooner when we knew it was not getting better. But we have to admit, we were afraid of more bill…When we took him for final exam on December 29th, next day his pain started to get so worse that made us doubt something had happend at the Hospital because he was not crying at all before, he was handling well in his condition. On 31st, He was crying all day all night. I peted him and did Reike all night. New year’s day, we took him to an emergency in Langley and got a much storonger pain medications so he can sleep with pain relief. On the 2nd, It was the surgery day but the doctor wanted to do his surgery with a specialist so we accepted. He stayed in the Hospital under the pain manegement but he wanted to come home with me every time when I visit him.
We think things could have been handled better in hindsight. We have spent alot of money and got nowhere. We still have a dog and two cats. We may have a another dog sometime because we think a dog needs another dogs company. We would like to have a good relattionship with the Doctor and staff that we can trust them.
I am just so thankful that Buddy was with our life. We will never forget such a gentle dog, Buddy. Thank you so much for a wonderful memory, Buddy.
May you rest in peace.
We loved you so much.
